Hydrophilic / hydrophobic bioactive surface coatings

Bioactive surface coatings

It is important for biomaterials that formation of thrombotic emboli and inflammation is avoided. This is commonly achieved through the use of a surface coating of either PTFE, which is smooth but thrombogenic, or an adherent hydrophobic material. The foreign surface of a biomaterial is a trigger to coagulation and/or inflammation, the patient receives nowadays systematically anticoagulant drugs and/or antibiotics to counterbalance this. INterface BIOmaterials B.V. is working on the development of new hydrophilic and bioactive coatings with several industrial partners.
